CS IRC
There is an unofficial off-campus IRC channel for computer science students to collaborate, socialize, and otherwise idle in.
To connect, you need an IRC client. Some recommendations for whatever platform you're on:
- Chatzilla - Firefox Addon (FLOSS)
- Konversation - KDE (FLOSS)
- Quassel - Qt with optional KDE bits (FLOSS)
- XChat - GTK (FLOSS)
- irssi - console (FLOSS)
- Colloquy - OSX Native
- VisualIRC - Windows Native (No built-in SSL support)
- EPIC4/5 - POSIX console (FLOSS)
- Our own copy of PJIRC - A java-based in-browser IRC client. No download or installation required.
The channel is #uakroncs on irc.slashnet.org. If you are on campus and wish to connect, please use SSL through pinky.slashnet.org on port 6697. This is because UA's network (not the CS network) filters IRC, leading to constant ping timeouts or, if you're lucky, pings in the domain of minutes. Their claim is that IRC is an unsecure protocol because those nefarious crackers use it to control botnets.
Current staff include:
- AltarCrystal - Brian McClain, founder
- workman161/tdfischer - Trever Fischer, FLOSS guru
